Objective: To determine if depression is associated with adherence to treatment in patients with HIV. Material and methods: An analytical, observational and transversal prospective study was carried out. For the sample, 76 patients were selected, all of whom were diagnosed with HIV, and in the HAART program at Gustavo Lanatta Lujan de Bagua Hospital in 2016, information was obtained from Zung's data collection and depression scale, Morisky Green's test, the selection was census and those that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected, excluding those that did not. Results: It can be seen that 90% of the patients with poor adherence present depression and 62% with good adherence present depression. Observing a statistically significant associat ion (p˂.01) between depression and adherence to treatment in patients with HIV at Hospital de Apoyo II - Bagua, in 2016. The frequency of depression was 65 cases, of which 88% presented Depression and 55% did not present depression, observing poor adherence to treatment in both groups, with predominance in patients with depression. It was found that of 100% of patients with poor adherence, 44% had moderate depression, 43% had mild depression, 3% severe depression and 10% no depression; the ages at which depression occurs most frequently is 18 to 44 years. It was found that 78% of patients with poor adherence are between 18 and 34 years of age, 66% of HIV cases occur in males, compared to 34% in females. Conclusions: there is an association between depression and adherence to antiretroviral therapy in patients with HIV at Hospital de Apoyo II - Bagua, in 2016. Making patients with depression 5.94 times more likely to have poor adherence to patients without depression, being able to vary with a 95% confidence between 2.08 and 16.91 times more.
