significativa.
INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial pneumonia is a high morbimortality disease. Recent studies associate the use of proton pump inhibitors to its appearance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of proton pump inhibitors is a risk factor for nosocomial pneumonia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: It was performed a case-control study, which analyzed 91 cases and 182 controls, from patients hospitalized during January 2010 to June 2015, in Belen Hospital of Trujillo. RESULTS: It was noted that 51.6% of patients that contracted pneumonia nosocomial were male. The average age was 66.12 ± 21.7 years. From the total number of patients who contracted nosocomial pneumonia 53.8% used proton pump inhibitors, and 31.3% of the patients who did not have nosocomial pneumonia used proton pump inhibitors, stating that the use of proton pump inhibitors and risk of nosocomial pneumonia presented a highly significant correlation. (OR 2.56, CI 95% 1.52 - 4.59, p= 0.000318). CONCLUSIONS: The use of proton pump inhibitors is a risk factor for nosocomial pneumonia, raising 2.56 times the risk of contracting it, compared to patients who do not use of proton pump inhibitors.
