To determine whether obesity is a risk factor for colonic diverticulitis in patients of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, casecontrol study was conducted. The study population consisted of 138 adult patients with diverticular disease of the colon; Which were divided into 2 groups: with diverticulitis or without diverticulitis; The odds ratio and chisquare test were calculated. Results: The frequency of obesity in patients with colonic diverticulitis was 26%. The frequency of obesity in patients without colonic diverticulitis was 10%. Obesity is a factor associated with colonic diverticulitis with an odds ratio of 3.25 which was significant (p <0.05). The mean body mass index in the group with colon diverticulitis was significantly higher compared to the group without colon diverticulitis (p <0.05). Conclusions: Obesity is a risk factor for colonic diverticulitis in patients of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital
