To describe and compare the main causes of death and associated factors among maternal deaths occurred between 2007-2011 and 2012-2016 in La Libertad. Methods: We conducted an observational, descriptive, cross sectional, retrospective study. Universe was all maternal deaths occurred in La Libertad between 2007-2011 and 20122016. Epidemiological investigation sheets of maternal deaths occurred on such periods were obtained. Information was retrieved onto a data collection sheet. Results: 350 maternal deaths were registered, from which 205 (58.50%) happened between 2007 and 2011 and 145 (41.50%) between 2012 and 2016. Age mean was 29 ±7.62 years, not existing statistical difference between groups. We found that 221 (63.14%) maternal deaths occurred because of direct causes, from which the most frequent was postpartum hemorrhage (40.10%), meanwhile 105 (30.00%) occurred because of indirect causes. In addition, 16 incidental causes were reported (4.57%), mainly because of pesticide poisoning (68.00%) and asphyxia (25.00%); finally, there were eight maternal deaths with unknown cause (2.29%). Conclusions: The maternal mortality associated factors that vary between the study periods are: scholar degree, gestational age at first prenatal consult, gestational age at death, time to reach health center and stage of pregnancy at death. There were no variations on causes of maternal death between both study periods, also between types of maternal death cause, direct cause shows a variation between both study periods.
