Objective: To demonstrate that type 2 diabetes mellitus and previous antibiotic therapy are factors associated with urinary tract infection by enterobacteriaceae producing extended spectrum beta-lactamases. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 474 adult patients according to inclusion and exclusion criteria established in two groups: with or without urinary tract infection by extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae. Results: The frequency of type 2 diabetes mellitus was 12% in the patient group with ITLE BLEE and 5% in the group of patients without ITLE BLEE. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for urinary tract infection by extended spectrum betalactamase-producing enterobacteria with an odds ratio of 2.82 which was significant (p <0.05). The frequency of previous antibiotic therapy was 23% in the patient group with ITLE BLEE, and 11% in the group of patients without ITLE BLEE. Previous antibiotic therapy is a risk factor for urinary tract infection by extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae with an odds ratio of 2.51 which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusions: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and previous antibiotic therapy are factors associated with urinary tract infection by enterobacteriaceae producing extended spectrum beta-lactamases.
