Objective: To determine if the low level of hematocrit is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity in the preterm infant of less than 1500 grams at birth attended at Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 182 patients who were divided into 2 groups: retinopathy of prematurity or without this condition; The chi square test and the odds ratio calculation were applied. Results: The group of neonates with retinopathy presented mean gestational age and birth weight significantly lower than the group of neonates without retinopathy. The frequency of low hematocrit level in neonates with retinopathy of prematurity was 37%. The frequency of low hematocrit level in neonates without retinopathy of prematurity was 23%. The low level of hematocrit in neonates is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity with an odds ratio of 1.98; Which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusions: The low level of hematocrit is a risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity in the preterm infant less than 1500 grams at birth attended at Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray.
