OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of psychological counseling in the reduction of anxiety in hospitalized patients due to high obstetric risk at Hospital Belen of Trujillo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective, quasi-experimental study was conducted with a sample of 40 patients hospitalized for high obstetric risk in the obstetrics service who met the selection criteria. RESULTS: Table 1 shows the characteristics of the patients hospitalized for high obstetric risk who participated in the experimental group and control, who presented statistical equality. In Table 2 and Figure 2, severe anxiety was observed in 65% of the experimental group and moderate anxiety in 65% of the control group before psychological counseling. In Table 3 and Figure 3, mild anxiety is observed in 45% of the experimental group and severe anxiety in 55% of the control group after psychological counseling and initial medical management. Table 4 shows that 13 of the patients who initially presented severe anxiety with the pretest, after the psychological counseling 3 of the patients were maintained with severe anxiety, 6 of the patients presented moderate anxiety and 4 of the patients presented anxiety Carry in the pos test In Table 5, a significant statistical difference (1.55) (p˂.05) in the anxiety between both groups was observed. A statistically significant (p <0.01) decrease in anxiety in the experimental group after psychological counseling is shown in Table 6. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological counseling is effective for the reduction of anxiety in hospitalized patients due to high obstetric risk.
