OBJECTIVE: To determine if idiopathic polyhydramnios is a risk factor for maternal- perinatal adverse outcomes at Hospital Belen de Trujillo during the period January 2012July 2015. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical, retrospective cohort study was performed. The study population consisted of the pregnant women in the obstetrics department of Hospital Belen de Trujillo during the period January 2012 to July 2015, who met the selection criteria; That 187 patients (77 exposed to idiopathic polyhydramnios and 110 not exposed to idiopathic polyhydramnios) were required for the conformation of the sample. The data were obtained from the Maternal-Perinatal Clinical Histories provided by the Department of Archives, prior permission requested from the director of the Hospital Belen de Trujillo. For data processing and analysis, the statistical package SPSS V 23.0 was used; For the comparison of qualitative variables the chi2 test was used, and for t he quantitative variables, Student's T test was used, with an error less than 5% (p <0.05) and a 95% CI; And to categorize the variables we calculated the relative risk (RR). RESULTS: It was obtained that during the period January 2012 and July 2015, there were 143 Clinical Histories with diagnosis of Polyhydramnios of which, 44 with a known cause, 87 idiopathic and 12 lost clinical histories. The Clinical Histories with idiopathic polyhydramnios diagnosis represents 65,9% of the review clinical histories that approximate to the reported in the revised bibliography. The mean age for the exposed patients was 30.17 years; for the non-exposed 23,35 years (p <0.05), the maternal-perinatal adverse outcomes that presented association with the idiopathic polyhydramnios were: caesarean delivery (12.2%), low birth weight 12 (6.4%), preterm birth 19 (10.2%), low birth weight 12 (6.4%), fetal macrosomia 25 (13.4%), APGAR low at 5 minutes 10 (5.3%), resuscitation 7 (3.7%); Of which had no association with idiopathic polyhydramnios were: premature rupture of membranes 7 (3.7%) and perinatal death 1 (0.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Adverse maternal-perinatal outcomes related to exposure to idiopathic polyhydramnios as a risk factor were: preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, fetal macrosomia, low APGAR at one and five minutes, low birth weight and Neonatal resuscitation.
