Objective: To determine if there is an association between elevated serum lithium levels and hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder at the Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue. Material and Methods: An analytical, case-control study was carried out. The study population consisted of 84 patients with bipolar disorder exposed to lithium treatment; Who were divided into 2 groups: with elevated or nonelevated serum lithium Results: There is an association between elevated serum lithium levels and hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder with an odds ratio of 8.84 which was significant. The frequency of hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder and elevated serum lithium was 13/28 = 46%. The frequency of hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder and non-elevated serum lithium was 5/56 = 9% No significant differences were observed in relation to age, gender or origin among patients with bipolar disorder with elevated or nonelevated serum lithium. Conclusions: There is an association between elevated serum lithium levels and hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder at the Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue.
