OBJECTIVE: Determine the effect of chewing gum with polyols in the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 under in vitro conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 132 test tubes and Petri Dishes 24. The macrodilution containing chewing gum with Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 polyalcohols and in brain heart broth agar (BHI) respectively. The antimicrobial effect was determined by the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA test was complemented by DUNCAN test for determining the MIC. Statistical significance was considered 5% (p <0.05). RESULTS: Chewing gums with polyalcohols studied have bactericidal effect on the concentration of 50% (MBC) on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, under in vitro conditions. Also have inhibitory effect was statistically significant difference p <0.05 in their concentrations, chewing gum with polyalcohols Trident Splash is the one that showed greater inhibitory effect with (MIC) of 3.13%, followed Trident Fresh with a (MIC) 6.25%, then Topline with a (MIC) of 12.5%, which finally showed lower inhibitory effect was Trident Sensatios wit h a (CMI) of 25%; on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, under in vitro conditions. CONCLUSION: It was found that chewing gums with polyalcohols studied have bactericidal and inhibitory effect statistically significant decrease p <0.05 on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, under in vitro conditions.
