“Periapical surgery is a procedure performed in the presence of periapical pathoses when routine endodontic treatment or retreatment have failed. Most failures in root canal treatment due to contamination with microorganisms, with the Enterococcus faecalis primarily responsible for the same, so we seek effective alternatives for microbial and inexpensive inhibition which in this case was the Portland cement. The main objective of this work was to compare the inhibitory effect in vitro of MTA and Portland cement on Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. A prospective, experimental, comparative, prospective study. 8 petri dishes with 2 wells MTA and 2 of portland cement were used, therefore 16 inhibition halos were measured for each test substance. Enterococcus faecalis strains were seeded in petri dishes with agar Mueller Hinton, then in anaerobic environments exposed in the incubator at 37 ° C and record the diameter of the inhibition halos at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The results show that both substances have inhibitory effect on E. faecalis ATCC 29212. There was no significant difference in measurements made at 24 and 48 hours, but if there was an increase inhibition at 72 hours for both substances. It was also shown that the Portland cement showed better inhibitory activity than that produced by the Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). (P <0.05).
