Evaluate the in vitro antifungal effect of the ethanol extract of leaves of Bixa orellana L. “Achiote“ on Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Methods: An experimental study in vitro was performed. Ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bixa orellana L. “Achiote“was prepared to 5 concentrations: 5% (50 mg / ml), 50% (500 mg / ml), 75% (750 mg / ml) and 100% (1000 mg / ml). The method of Kirby Bauer (disk diffusion) and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was used to evaluate the antifungal activity was exhibited Candida albicans ATCC 10231 to five concentrations of the extract, also two control groups were used, one fluconazole and another with the microbial inoculum with saline; performing 10 repetitions each. Results: The present study demonstrated the antifungal effect of ethanol extract of the leaves of Bixa orellana L. “Achiote“ on Candida albicans ATCC 10231 to compare the inhibition halos according scale Duraffourd for 5 concentrations used, that Candida albicans ATCC 10231fue sensitive concentrations from 50% to 75% with an average diameter of halos of 11.6 and 16.1mm in diameter respectivamemte while a concentration of 100% the average diameter of the halo was 33.8 and showing a similar effect to fluconazole. MIC Candida albicans ATCC 10231 for at concentration was 5% (50 mg / ml). Further tests using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan, it was observed that there is statistically significant difference between different concentrations of ethanol extract of Bixa orellana L. “Achiote“ on the growth of Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (P <0.05). Conclusions: The ethanol extract of the leaves of Bixa orellana L. “Achiote“ if you have antifungal effect against Candida albicans ATCC 10231.
