To assess whether there is a relationship between the use of oral contraceptive and rheumatoid arthritis in adult women attended. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical, case-control study, which included 192 women with rheumatoid arthritis and 768 controls without rheumatoid arthritis, served in the District Hospital of Santa Isabel of El Porvenir. RESULTS: The 23.9% of women with rheumatoid arthritis and 30.9% of women without rheumatoid arthritis made use of the oral contraceptive pill, obtaining an OR = 0.71 with 95% from 0.49 to 1.01. Rheumatoid arthritis predominated among which had between 35 to 40 old years with 49%, followed by women aged between 30 and 34 old years with 33.3%; not found differences of age with the group that did not give rheumatoid arthritis (p = 0.879). The 67.4% of women with rheumatoid arthritis and the 64.6% of women without rheumatoid arthritis used oral contraceptives for one time less than 5 years. CONCLUSIONS: The use of oral contraceptive was higher in women sinned rheumatoid arthritis compared with rheumatoid arthritis, had them although Sin statistical differences. Not associating the use of oral contraceptives with rheumatoid arthritis. In the characteristic old predominated women between 40 and 49 old years, as well as the use of oral contraceptives for a time less than five years, both women had and did not have rheumatoid arthritis.
