Objective: To determine the in vitro antifungal effect of ethanol-water extract Eleutherine bulbosa bulbs on two strains of Candida albicans ATCC 90028. Material and Methods: An experimental, comparative, prospective study was conducted. Plant material (Eleutherine bulbosa bulbs) previously dried, pulverized and sieved was used later to obtain the hydroethanolic extract, by the method of the final product required maceration with concentrations of 15%, 50% and 75% was obtained. To evaluate the antifungal activity of E.bulbosa, exposed to C. albicans ATCC 90028 at 3 concentrations of ethanol-water extract by using the disk diffusion test or Kirby and Bauer, was compared with clotrimazole control. Results: It was determined that only 75% of the hydroethanolic extract E.bulbosa bulbs was highly sensitive while the other concentrations of hydroethanolic extract showed lower sensitivity (15% limit was 50% sensitivity and medium sensitivity); clotrimazole control was highly sensitive (more antifungal effect) with respect to the different concentrations of hydroethanolic extract. Conclusions: We demonstrated that ethanol-water extract Eleutherine bulbosa bulbs (piri piri) has antifungal effect in vitro on two strains of Candida albicans ATCC 90028. The sensitivity of extract Eleutherine bulbosa bulbs was in direct proportion to the concentration: the higher the concentration greater antifungal effectiveness.
