This prospective cross-experimental research aims to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect of essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. For the experiment different concentrations of essential oil Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) were used: 5%; 2.5%; 1.25%, 0.625%; 0.312%; 0.078%; 0.039% that was inoculated with Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 0.1ml. CMI was evaluated by spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 620 nm; and CMB by observing the growth of colonies. Data for CMI were processed with the nonparametric tests; Kruskal-Wallis test to assess the minimum inhibitory concentration of oil and complemented by Dunn's test to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. The nonparametric analysis was also performed to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration. The result of CMI and the CMB was 1.25%, attributing the citral containing Cymbopogon citratus as a possible antibacterial effect against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175
