To assess whether the metabolic disorders are a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with liver cirrhosis at Regional Hospital of Trujillo during the period January 2005 to December 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, case-control study nested in a cohort, which evaluated 142 patients with liver cirrhosis, distributed in two groups of patients, Case 38 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma patients and 104 controls without hepatocellular carcinoma. RESULTS: The mean age in the case group was 67,34 ± 6,27 years and the control group 67,50 ± 5,42 years (p > 0,05); the proportion of male gender in cases and controls were 73,68% and 63,46% respectively (p > 0,05). In relation to the time of diagnosis of liver cirrhosis, the means found in cases and controls were 8,82 ± 6,44 ± 3,68 years and 2,28 years respectively (p < 0,001). For BMI, the mean was 22,67 cases ± 3,29 kg / m2 and 25,51 ± 2,11 controls kg / m2 (p < 0,001); the proportion of overweight and obesity in the case group was 2,63% and 28,95% and the control group was 0% and 71,5% respectively (p < 0,001). The presence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus type 2 in the case group was 28,95% and 31,58% respectively and in the control group was 5,77% and 4,81% respectively (p < 0,01 and p < 0,001 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus were risk factors associated with hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with liver cirrhosis.
