To assess whether the ankle - brachial index is a predictor of peripheral arterial disease in asymptomatic men with and without hypertension in middle-aged Tarapoto Hospital II - ESSALUD during the period from October to December 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, cohort study, which evaluated 242 patients between 45-55 years of age divided into two groups (group I: 121 patients with hypertension and group II: 121 patients without this condition) who came to some control in clinic external Medicine. RESULTS: The mean age in group I was 49.98 ± 3.20 years and group II was 49.60 ± 3.29 years (p > 0.05); the proportion of obesity in group I and II was 11.57% and 16.53% respectively (p > 0.05), with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia in group I attended 12,40% and 19,83% respectively, and in group II were present at 8.26% and 12.40% respectively (p > 0.05 and p > 0.05 respectively). Regarding the ITB, the mean of the group I patients was 0.86 ± 0.45 and group II patients was 0.98 ± 0.46 (p < 0.01); when he categorized the ITB was observed that the proportion of EAP in group I and II was 13,22% and 4,13% respectively (p < 0.05), with a RR = 3,54 CI 95% [1,30 – 9,65]. CONCLUSIONS: The ITB if it was predictor of peripheral arterial disease in middle-aged male patients with hypertension.
