To determine whether Base Excess admission is a predictor of mortality in patients with moderate and severe trauma in the period from January 01, 2011 to December 31, 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational study, analytical, retrospective and diagnostic tests; which evaluated 219 patients with moderate and severe trauma at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo. RESULTS: The overall mean age was 33.1 ± 14.7 years, with the average in the deceased group of 33.2 ± 15.5 and in the group of survivors of 33.1 ± 14, 7 (p> 0.05), and with respect to gender 77.27% of the patients were male in the group of deceased and the surviving group 91.42% (p <0.01). The mechanism of injury was the most common at 71.23% and 61.37% in the deceased group and 73.71% in the survivor group. (P> 0.05%). The Median of Vacuum therapy was 2.4 ± 2.5 hours in the deceased group and the group of survivors of 3.9 ± 5.3 (p <0.001). Base excess categorized to a cutoff -4; 100% of those who died had a below value of < - 4 and in the group of patients who survived the 46.3% of the patients had a below value this cutoff, and with respect to the performance of Base Excess as a predictor of mortality had a sensitivity , specificity , PPV and NPV of 100%, 53.7%, 35.2% and 100%, respectively. The diagnostic yield of Excess Bases in predicting mortality of 94.0%. CONCLUSIONS: Base Excess showed performance diagnosis predicts mortality in patients with moderate and severe trauma of 94.0%). Base excess categorized to a cutoff -5.85 can get good indicators with a sensitivity 97.7% and specificity 85.1%.
