to assess whether peripheral arterial disease is a risk factor associated with the presentation of diabetic foot in the Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital during the period January 2010 to December 2014. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a case-control study, which evaluated 129 patients, who were divided into two groups, those in 43 patients with diabetic foot controls and 86 patients without diabetic foot all served in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. RESULTS: The mean age of cases was 69.14 ± 12.32 years and controls was 68.79 ± 12.35 years (p > 0.001); the 60.47% and 61.63% of cases and controls were males respectively (p > 0.05). Regarding the time of diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, we observed that the mean in cases and controls was 22.71 ± 8.45 years and 20.09 ± 8.58 years (p > 0.05); controls glycosylated hemoglobin at diagnosis was observed that where the mean was 7.99 ± 1.62 and controls the mean was 6.68 ± 0.83 (p < 0.001). By linking peripheral arterial disease and study groups, we observed that the presence of PAD in patients corresponding to the cases was 81.40% and 45.35% controls was (p < 0.001), with an OR = 95% CI 5.27 [2.19 to 12.68]. CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral arterial disease was found to be a risk factor for diabetic foot, increasing by 5.27 times as likely to develop diabetic foot when the PAD is present.
