To determine whether prematurity, low birth weight and low Apgar Score at birth are neonatal risk factors associated with the development of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) in newborns treated at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo during the period 2007-2014. METHODS: Analytical, observational case-control study where newborns of Department of Neonatology of HBT during the period 2007-2014 were attended. Newborns were separated into two groups: those diagnosed with NEC and those without a diagnosis of NEC; in both groups the presence or absence of risk factors was prematurity, low birth weight, low Apgar score at birth; finally the association between variables was established with the chi square test statistic and odds ratio (OR) with a confidence interval of 95%. RESULTS: Prematurity (OR =6.85, IC95: 3.44-13.65; p =0.00), low birth weight (OR: 15.56, IC95: 7.26-33.33, p=0.00) low Apgar score at 1 minute (OR =3.45, IC95: 1.90- 6.25; p =0.000031); low Apgar score at 5 minutes (OR =2.66, IC95: 1.16-6.11; p =0.018) were identified as significant risks factors for the development NEC. CONCLUSION: Prematurity, low birth weight, low Apgar score at birth have proven significant risk factors for developing NEC.
