The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between diagnosis and psychosocial aspect of TMD according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Index (RDC/TMD) axis I and II in patients treated at health centers in the district of Salaverry. The sample was composed of 170 patients between 18-30 years. The results were that the diagnosis of muscular disorders occurred in 48.3%; articular disorders 35.9% and 17.6% inflammatory disorders. The myofascial pain scored 27.1%, the disk displacement with reduction and arthralgia 17.6% 14.1%, the most prevalent diagnoses in each group of the physical axis, with higher prevalence in females. The 91.8% of patients had simple diagnostic (one diagnosis), 4.7 introduce dual diagnosis (2 diagnoses) and 3.5% did not have any kind of disorder. With respect to axis II, the degree of chronic pain (grade 2) won 31.2%, 48.8% moderate depression and somatization moderate 55.9%, the most prevalent diagnoses in each group psychosocial axis, with higher prevalence in women. Direct relationship between degree of muscle disorders and chronic pain, depression and somatization (p <0.05) was presented. In conclusions the Muscle disorders were directly related to the degree of chronic pain, depression and somatization, as well as joint disorder grade chronic pain.
