Objective: To establish the association between the presence of food insecurity in the home and malnutrition in children under five years attended in Los Algarrobos, Piura, in 2020. Methods: It is an observational, analytical, crosssectional study, it included 206 children under five years of age with their companions, who went to the Los Algarrobos Health Establishment. The companions were given the Food Insecurity and Hunger Module (FIHM), to determine if the household to which the child belonged was food insecure or not. Weight and height measurements of children under five years of age were taken to assess their nutritional status. Results: 206 pediatric patients were finally enrolled. It was identified that the presence of food insecurity was significantly associated with an increase of 1.66 times the prevalence of acute malnutrition and 0.85 times the prevalence of chronic malnutrition. The prevalence of mild chronic malnutrition was present in 50.98% of the children, while acute malnutrition was present in 14.08%. The age and sex variable of the minor was not significantly associated with any type of malnutrition. Regarding the characteristics of the companion, the level of complete secondary education and the average age of 28.28 years, were significantly associated with chronic and acute malnutrition, respectively. The prevalence of food insecurity was 65.55%. Food insecurity among children with acute malnutrition was identified in 24 (82.76%) households and for chronic malnutrition in 82 (78.1%) households, in both cases the variables studied were significantly associated (p <0.05). Conclusions: Food insecurity is significantly associated with the presence of malnutrition, increasing the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years of age.
