In this project is described in a first moment, regulations that exist worldwide, and its influence in our country. Concepts about failure modes and fracture gap that develops during the breaking of a dam of loose materials is described. Also aims to give an overview of the current existing methods for numerical modeling of free surface flow. Since the study focuses on the break in earth dams, we focus on the regime variable modeling in one and two dimensions, and the equations describing the phenomenon. The HEC-RAS (Dimensional) and Iber (Two-dimensional) models are used to simulate the process of breaking a dam overflow loose material failure occurred by this. To compare both models model a series of tests before applying it to a real case as Palo Redondo Dam, the results were associated with both models. It is concluded that the flow over a dam break event is far from being onedimensional, so Iber is more reliable and effective to this event refers.
