To determine if there are differences in the effectiveness and safety of leflunomide compared with methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital. Material and methods: An analytical cohort study was carried out in which 128 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were included, according to selection criteria which were divided according to the use of leflunomide or methotrexate, the chi square were calculated. Results: No significant differences were observed regarding the frequencies of sex, anemia, diabetes, hypoalbuminemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, elevated C-reactive protein among patients with rheumatoid arthritis exposed to one or the other treatment (p>0.05), no significant differences were observed regarding the clinical effectiveness with the use of leflunomide compared with methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (p>0.05); leflunomide is safer than methotrexate in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (p<0.05). Conclusion: There are differences in the safety but not in effectiveness of leflunomide compared with methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital.
