To demonstrate whether poor glycemic control is a factor associated with systemic pruritus in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2). MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out, for which the clinical histories of 321 patients with DM-2 who were treated in the dermatology, internal medicine or endocrinology outpatient clinic of the Belén Hospital in Trujillo between the years 2015 - 2019. Data on the diagnosis of systemic pruritus and poor glycemic control were collected. The results were analyzed using the Chi-square test, the phi coefficient test, and the multivariate analysis using logistic regression. RESULTS: It was discovered that of the total number of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 68.2% of patients have poor glycemic control, while 31.8% do not have poor glycemic control, in addition it was found that the frequency in which systemic pruritus appears in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus it is 12.5% while 87.5% of patients do not present systemic pruritus. For the measure of association of poor glycemic control and systemic pruritus, it was found through the phi coefficient test, which is a measure of association for nominal qualitative variables, for 2x2 tables, a positive value of Phi of: 0.257, which determines the positive and slightly significant association of both variables. CONCLUSION: Poor glycemic control is a factor associated with systemic pruritus in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
