To determine the association between maternal short inter-gestational period and nutritional status in children between 6 months and 2 years of age at the Hospital Regional EsSalud III José Cayetano Heredia, Piura-2020. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in patients between 6 to 24 months of age who attended the outpatient clinic of the Hospital Regional EsSalud III José Cayetano Heredia during the year 2020. Cases were defined as those patients presenting acute malnutrition or overweight. A data collection form was applied, and the nutritional assessment was evaluated using the WHO curves. Statistical analysis was performed in the statistical program STATA V.15. Results: In the present study, 180 infants between 6 and 24 months of age (45 cases and 135 controls) were recruited. Among those with chronic malnutrition, the most prevalent intergenic period was less than 24 months in 45.71% (n=16) and in those with overweight/obesity, the most prevalent intergenic period was greater than 36 months in 70%. In the multivariate analysis, it was identified that an intergenic period less than 24 months was associated with a higher risk of chronic malnutrition (OR=4.32, CI95%=2.72-6.87, p<0.001) and a short intergenic period was associated with 3.55 times of risk of developing overweight/obesity (OR=3.55, 95% CI=0.49- 25.53, p=0.243), although this result was not statistically significant. Conclusions: A short inter-gestational period was a risk factor for the development of chronic undernutrition but not for overweight/obesity
