Objective: To determine whether hyperemesis gravidarum is a risk factor for the development of preeclampsia in pregnant patients attended at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the José Alfredo Mendoza Olavarría Hospital - Tumbes, 2017 - 2022. Methodology: Observational, analytical, retrospective, case-control study. Fifty six medical records with a diagnosis of preeclampsia were required for cases and 112 medical records without a diagnosis of preeclampsia for controls. The instrument was the data collection form. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test and Odds ratio. Results: After applying the Odds ratio test, 3.710 was obtained, which indicates that a pregnant woman with hyperemesis gravidarum has 3.710 times the risk of suffering preeclampsia. After performing the analysis by means of the chi-square test, p≤0.05 was obtained; therefore, there is an association between hyperemesis gravidarum and preeclampsia. Conclusions: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a risk factor for the development of preeclampsia
