OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pregestational obesity in adolescent stage is a risk factor for preeclampsia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical study of population cases and controls was carried out, which evaluated 968 teenage pregnant women who received prenatal care in the Gyneco-Obstetrics service of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital. A data collection sheet was applied where clinical, anthropometric and independent factors were present. First, a bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test (X2) for categorical variables and the t-Student test for quantitative variables, and finally, the multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 242 teenage pregnant women met the criteria for preeclampsia forming the case group, and 726 pregnant women formed the controls; the bivariate analysis identified that the variables with the greatest significance (p <0.05) were: nulliparous, full-term pregnant women (≥ 37 weeks) and vaginal delivery; Pregestational obesity presented an ORc = 2.15, which indicates that there is twice the possibility of suffering preeclampsia in pregnant adolescents. The multivariate analysis through logistic regression, determined pregestational obesity with an ORa = 2.33, which shows that the probability of suffering preeclampsia against pregestational obesity in adolescents is twice. CONCLUSION: Pregestational obesity is a strong and independent risk factor for preeclampsia in teenage pregnant women.
