The characterization of the canine and feline population, as well as the knowledge of the owners about legislation on responsible pet ownership, was determined by applying 4417 surveys in the El Porvenir district, Trujillo province. After processing, a ratio of 4.87 canines / person and 9.15 cats / person was obtained; The average per household corresponded to 1.74 dogs and 1.62 cats with a confinement of 62.7% in dogs and 53.3% for cats, the average life for dogs was 2.6 years and 1.43 years for cats. The male sex prevailed in the case of dogs and cats with 52.5% and 51.3% respectively. The incidence of neutered animals was 7.6% and 7.9% for dogs and cats respectively. The mixed breed was predominant with 74.5% for dogs and 98.5% for cats. Rabies vaccination coverage corresponded to 72.7% in dogs and 13.3% in cats. 55% of residents know the legislation on responsible pet ownership and the scope of Law No. 30407, 35.2% mention knowing the law No. 27596 and 28.1% the health guide. It is concluded that the indices obtained in the characterization of the canine and feline population, as well as the poor knowledge of the inhabitants about responsible possession of animals constitute the basis for implementing animal health programs in the prevention of zoonoses.
