OBJECTIVES. Identify the main type of acute complication of Diabetes Mellitus and determine the sociodemographic and biochemical characteristics of hospitalized patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Simple randomized study for convenience of descriptive-transversal nature, with 100 confirmed cases of diabetes mellitus that aimed to know the acute complication presented and the biochemical and sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS. Hypoglycaemia was found to be the main complication, with a total of 50% of cases studied. A predominance of female sex was found with 64% of cases with some acute complication, as well as the most prevalent age range that 6 came to the hospital was 66-75 years with 29%. The average age found was 60. 73ª (range: 15ª - 92ª) and the average weight found was 63.26 kg (range 40-110 kg). CONCLUSIONS. In the present study it is concluded that the main complication of DM to hypoglycaemia with a prevalence of 50% of total cases, it is also concluded that of the total cases diagnosed with some acute complication of Diabetes Mellitus, 64% were of Feminine sex. It is concluded that the alteration of consciousness is the most prevalent sign of hypoglycemia manifestation with the appearance of this in 60% of the total cases of hypoglycemia.
