Determine if prolonged consumption of proton pump inhibitors is a risk factor for irritable bowel syndrome in adult patients. Material and Methods: A study of case-control was carried out. The study population consisted of 136 patients from the gastroenterology service, treated of ambulatory way, at the “Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo”. Of these patients, were divided, case group, patients diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (n = 68) and control group, patients without a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (n = 68). For the analytical statistics, the Chi-square test (X2 ) was used, the Odds Ratio was analyzed to establish the association relationship with irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, multivariate analysis was realized, using logistic regression. Results: The prolonged consumption of proton pump inhibitors in the group of patients with irritable bowel syndrome was 61.8%, while the prolonged consumption of proton pump inhibitors in the group of patients without irritable bowel syndrome was 29.4%. Patients who prolonged consumption of proton pump inhibitors were 4,5 times more at risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome compared to patients who did not consumption proton pump inhibitors for a prolonged period (ORa 4.5, 95% CI 2.06 - 9.84; p <0.05). Conclusions: Prolonged consumption of proton pump inhibitors is a risk factor for irritable bowel syndrome.
