OBJECTIVE: To determine if iterative caesarean section is a risk factor for uterine atony in patients treated at the Teaching Regional Hospital of Trujillo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective, analytical and case-control study was carried out in which 168 pregnant patients were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided into 2 groups: 42 patients with uterine atony and 126 without uterine atony; applying the odds ratio, and the chi-square statistical test. RESULTS: The frequency of great multiparity, obesity, fetal macrosomia and prolonged labor was significantly higher in the group of patients with uterine atony (p<0.05); the iterative caesarean section frequency in patients with uterine atony was 38%; the frequency of iterative caesarean section in patients without uterine atony was 17%; iterative caesarean section as a risk factor for uterine atony with an odds ratio of 2.90 which was significant (p <0.05); The multivariate analysis corroborates the significance of the risk for the variables: iterative caesarean section, large multiparity, obesity, fetal macrosomia, and prolonged labor as a risk factor for uterine atony (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: It was not possible to isolate iterative caesarean section as a single risk factor. It was found that fetal macrosomia, prolonged labor, obesity and large multiparity were also risk factors for uterine atony.
