Diabetes mellitus type 2 and nephrolithiasis are common causes of morbidity. In Peru, the number of people with diabetes mellitus is growing fastly. Several studies will demonstrate a relationship between diabetes mellitus type 2 and nephrolithiasis, suggesting a common physiological pathway in both pathologies. Their early identification can help prevent incidental and recurrent kidney stones. Objective: Demonstrate if diabetes mellitus type 2 is a risk factor for nephrolithiasis by establishing and comparing the incidence of nephrolithiasis in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2. Materials and methods: Longitudinal analytical observational study of historical cohort design. It was performed in 309 patients between 29 - 69 years without diabetes mellitus and with diabetes mellitus with a 10-year history of illness in Trujillo. It will be analyzed if they had diabetes mellitus type 2 and if they presented nephrolithiasis in subsequent consultations through a survey with previous informed consent. The independent variable was diabetes mellitus type 2 and the dependent variable was nephrolithiasis. Results: The incidence of nephrolithiasis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (33.98%) is higher than patients without that diabetes mellitus (13.11%). Additionally, RR is 2.593, IC 95% (1.665 – 4.037) with p<0.05 Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a risk factor for nephrolithiasis.
