To determine if laparoscopic surgery is a protective factor against complications in post-operative patients for acute appendicitis. Material and methods: The present study is an observational, retrospective cohort study carried out on 222 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis and who underwent surgery during the period from 2015 to 2019 at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo (HRDT). The results were presented in simple and cross tables with simple and percentage frequencies. The Chi-Square test was used as well as the Odds Ratio test to determine if laparoscopic surgery represents a protective factor for acute appendicitis, among other associated factors. Results: Of the 222 patients who underwent surgery for acute appendicitis, 50% underwent open surgery and 10.8% had postoperative complications. Likewise, of the patients who showed postoperative complications, 79.2% underwent open surgery. It was determined that laparoscopic surgery represented a significant protective factor against postoperative complications (aOR = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.10 – 0.86; p = 0.04). Conclusions: Laparoscopic surgery is a significant protective factor against complications in post-operative patients for acute appendicitis.
