The aim: To assess whether there is correlation or not between levels of study habits and the degree of academic achievement in medical students of pre-clinical stage. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 138 medical students from the Antenor Orrego Private University who were studying the 1st to 5th cycles of the 2019-20 academic semester, who were applied the Study Habits Inventory of Palsane and Sharma, comparing the results with their belonging to the various thirds of the order of merit of the corresponding cycle. The data was analyzed using Kendall's Tau-b statistical test, Gamma, as well as Pearson's Chi Square. Results: Both, the relatively good or moderate level of study habits, as well as belonging to the upper third of the order of merit were the most frequent among students (54.3% and 58.7% respectively). No correlation was found between the levels of study habits and the degree of academic performance (p = 0.211), nor between the intervening variables, with the exception of the widowed marital status (p = 0.043); however, this last result may not be valid due to the infrequency of this variable. Conclusions: Despite not finding a relationship between the level of study habits and the degree of academic performance, this study should serve to search for new variables that affect the adequate performance of students, as well as strategies to modify them.
