Objective: To determine if neonatal hyperglycemia is a risk factor for the development of retinopathy of prematurity. Material and Method: An analytical, observational, cross-sectional, retrospective case-control population study was conducted in which 201 neonatal registry cards of preterm neonates ≤1500g were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided into 2 groups; patients with or without retinopathy of prematurity; applying the odds ratio and the chi square statistical test. Results: The analysis shows that of all the preterm neonates ≤1500g, 77 of them presented retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) and 124 not, obtaining that among the ones who presented ROP, 36% presented neonatal hyperglycemia and 11% did not, being significantly higher in the ROP group with an odds ratio of 4.49, (p <0.05). Conclusions: Neonatal hyperglycemia is a risk factor for the development of retinopathy of prematurity.
