To determine if the use of hormonal contraceptives is associated with a decrease in the frequency of dysmenorrhea in medical students at the Antenor Orrego Private University. Material and methods: A retrospective, analytical, sectional, cross-sectional study was carried out in which 134 medical students were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided into 2 groups: with or without dysmenorrhea; applying the chi-square statistical test and the odds ratio. Results: No significant differences were observed for the variables age, origin or academic performance between the students with or without dysmenorrhea (p>0.05); The distribution according to dysmenorrhea of the medical students was: dysmenorrhea (28%) and without dysmenorrhea (72%); The distribution according to type of contraceptive of the medical students was: combined oral (26%); combined parenteral (11%); oral progestins (8%); intramuscular progestins (5%); depot progestins (3%); others (35%) and none (12%); the use of hormonal contraceptives is associated with a decrease in dysmenorrhea in medical students with an odds ratio of 0.24, which was significant; the type of combined hormonal contraceptives is associated with a decrease in dysmenorrhea in medical students with an odds ratio of 0.11, which was significant. Conclusion: The use of hormonal contraceptives is associated with a decrease in the frequency of dysmenorrhea in medical students at the Antenor Orrego Private University
