The present comparative research carried out the study of lightweight concrete for structural use by two methods, using foaming additive or expanded polystylene beads in the mixture; for which a coarse aggregate called confitillo was used, in a proportion of 40% by weight of the total aggregate and 2% of Sika Viscocrete 2220 plasticizing additive, with the objective of evaluating the consistency property of lightweight concrete, the unit weight in the fresh state and the axial compression resistance in the hardened state; for which the foaming agent Sika Ligthcrete PE was used, in doses of 3, 3.5 and 4 Kg/m3 of concrete and for the light concrete made with expanded polystylene beads it was 30, 40 and 50% by volume depending on the aggregate fine: obtaining as results for the consistency tests levels greater than 5”, which is why they are classified as both methods of lightweight concrete designs with fluid consistency, however, it is the use of foaming additive that provides greater fluidity. In relation to the compacted unit weight of fresh concrete, the ACI 213R-14 standard finds values below 1600 Kg/m3 ideal for light concrete, a condition achieved with the use of foaming additive, since all its unit weight results are less than 1700 Kg/m3 approximately; While the values obtained with PPE only at the 50% level are close to complying with the recommendation of the standard with the value of 1660.4 Kg/m3; Likewise, in the compression resistance tests, both methods achieved results greater than 175 Kg/cm2, where with 3% foaming additive 288.3 Kg/cm2 was reached and with 30% PPE 261.3 Kg/cm2, both at 28 days of maturation.
