Sepsis is a pathological entity that puts the patient's life at risk; for this reason, it is considered a health priority. In this context, strategies for prevention, diagnosis and timely therapeutic approach have been developed. In addition, attention should be paid to the evolution of medium platelet volume during the first week after the onset of sepsis; inasmuch as, by not recovering its initial value, it is correlated with an unfavorable result. Objective: To determine that high medium platelet volume is associated with mortality in patients with septic shock. Material and methods: A retrospective case-control study was carried out in 86 patients with septic shock, depending on the presence or not of intrahospital mortality, the odds ratio was calculated. Results: The average age and the frequency of hyponatremia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlactatemia and hyperglycemia were higher in the deceased compared to the group of surviving patients (p<0.05). Elevated medium platelet volume is associated with mortality in patients with septic shock (OR=3.26; 95% CI: 1.3 – 8.0; p<0.05). In the multivariate analysis, the variables high medium platelet volume, hyponatremia, hypoalbuminemia and hyperglycemia are recognized as risk factors for mortality. Conclusion: High medium platelet volume is associated with mortality in patients with septic shock.
