The present study allowed to demonstrate if the Emotional Intelligence is related to the academic performance in mathematics in the 5th grade students of the educational institution Marcial Acharan Smith of Trujillo; 232 students participated in this study; the Correlational Descriptive design was used, 2 instruments were applied, the first is the Emotional Intelligence test based on the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS) of the Salovey and Mayer research group, which contains three key dimensions of EI with 8 items Each one of them: Emotional Attention, Emotional Clarity and Emotional Reparation, the other instrument is the Evaluation Questionnaire, consists of 4 instruments that measured the academic performance in mathematics in the areas of Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry and Statistics. For the processing and analysis of data, the non-parametric correlation model known as Spearman's Rho previously applied the normality test using Kolmogorov-smirnov was used. The result was a highly significant relationship (p <0.01) between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance in Mathematics for the 4 capacities. And as for the relationship between the dimensions of the Emotional Intelligence: emotional attention, emotional clarity and emotional repair related to the academic performance in mathematics was highly significant, we checked our hypothesis.
