To establish the epidemiological and clinical factors associated with post surgical complications due to mechanical intestinal obstruction (MIO) in patients at Hospital Alta Complejidad Virgen de la Puerta. Method: Case-control study, where the medical records of 60 postoperative patients for MIO between 2017 and 2020 were examined, divided into 20 patients with postoperative complications (cases) and 40 controls without complications, both evaluated during the first 30 days after surgery or until the patient is discharged. The odds ratio (OR) and adjusted OR were calculated by multivariate analysis to determine the associated factors. Results: 30% of the cases and 5% of the controls were over 75 years of age, this being a factor independently associated with post-surgical complications (aOR: 2.89, 95%CI: 1.84-10.48). Hypoalbuminemia was manifested in 55% of the cases and in 27.5% of the controls (ORa: 3.51, 95%CI: 1.87-14.10). The cut-off point for the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was 7.3, which presented a significant association with post-surgical complications due to MIO (aOR: 7.35, 95%CI: 1.85-29.26). Conclusion: Age is an epidemiological factor and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and hypoalbuminemia are clinical factors associated with post-surgical complications due to mechanical intestinal obstruction.
