To determine if the low serum ferritin level is a risk factor for diffuse alopecia in female patients of the dermatology service at Hospital Belen de Trujillo during the period January 2015 to December 2021. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical, case-control study was conducted, evaluating 78 female patients with diffuse alopecia evaluated and who had clinical history in the dermatology service at Hospital Belen de Trujillo, of which 39 cases correspond to the case group, while the remaining 39 correspond to the control group. Data were taken from the clinical histories of the patients. For the analysis of the results, the Pearson Chi-square test and the t-Student test were used, as well as the Odds ratio. RESULTS: In the group with diffuse alopecia, 48.7% were adults between 30 and 49 years of age (p>0.05), 94.9% of the patients were from urban areas (p>0.05) and 94.9% represented the non-poor population (p>0.05). Low serum ferritin levels were found in 28% of the patients in the group with diffuse alopecia, while in the control group, patients without alopecia, 10% had low serum ferritin levels. Patients with serum ferritin levels ≤ 70 ng/ml have 3.43 times higher risk of developing diffuse alopecia compared to patients with ferritin levels >70 ng/ml (OR 3.4375; 95% CI: 0.98 - 11.97; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Low serum ferritin levels are a risk factor for diffuse alopecia in female patients.
