Introduction: Since the end of 2019, the world has been facing a new pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has caused a considerable number of deaths in various countries, including our own. One of the drugs used to cope with this infection is ivermectin, due to a potential antiviral effect. Recently, following in vitro studies, several researchers argue that inhibitory activity on the nuclear transport of ivermectin could be effective against SARS-CoV-2 in humans. Objective: In order to know the current use of ivermectin in medical practice, a review study was conducted. Methods: The search strategy was developed according to the terms of the research topic. The descriptors in health sciences (DsCS) were searched in BIREME and the connectors in pubmed were used. Only primary studies produced between 2019 and 2020 were included. Conclusions: Several clinical trials are being conducted with ivermectin for its potential antiviral effect, however; they are at various stages of evaluation and implementation so it is necessary to wait for the results in the following months. Unfortunately the few published scientific studies lack a solid methodology so their findings should not be considered for a public health practice.
