Objective: To determine if gestational diabetes is a risk factor for preterm delivery in pregnant women attended in the Bethlehem Hospital of Trujillo. Material and methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in which 128 pregnancy records were included, according to selection criteria which were divided into 2 groups: patients with gestational diabetes or without gestational diabetes; applying the relative risk, and the chi square statistical test. Results: The frequency of inadequate prenatal control and multiparity was significantly higher in the group of pregnant women exposed to gestational diabetes (p <0.05). The frequency of preterm delivery in pregnant women with gestational diabetes was 36%. The frequency of preterm delivery in pregnant women without gestational diabetes was 20%. Gestational diabetes is a risk factor for preterm birth with a relative risk of 2.2 which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusion: Gestational diabetes is a risk factor for preterm birth in pregnant women treated at the Bethlehem Hospital in Trujillo.
