The objective of the study was to determine the seroprevalence of feline viral immunodeficiency (FIV) and identify the associated factors in cats from veterinary centers in the city of Trujillo, La Libertad region. To meet the objective, 100 domestic cats that attended veterinary consultation and who presented clinical symptoms compatible with a viral disease of any breed, sex and age. Patients diagnosed with FIV and immunocompromised patients were excluded. Our results showed a prevalence of 23.0%. 0.0% (0/26) cats between 6 and 11 months of age, 25.5% (13/51) of cats from 1 to 2 years old and 43.5% (10/23) of cats older than 2 years were positive to IVF. 30.3% (20/66) of the male felines evaluated were positive for FIV, 8.8% (3/34) of the females evaluated were positive for FIV. 25.9% (22/85) of non-neutered cats were FIV positive, 6.7% (1/15) of neutered cats were positive. The prevalence of FIV in adopted and homeborn cats was 24.4% (20/82) and 16.7% (3/18), respectively. The prevalence of FIV was 23.8% (20/84) among domestic cats that lived with others and those that did not live with other cats was 18.8% (3/16). Domestic cats with access to the outside showed a prevalence of 24.2% (22/91) and those without access 11.1% (1/9). Likewise, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in coexistence with other felines (p=0.6594), sex (p=0.2361), reproductive status (p=0.1030), origin (p=0.4807), and access abroad (p=0.3743) with respect to positivity for feline viral immunodeficiency; while age and sex showed a statistical difference (p<0.0001). We conclude that in the veterinary medical centers of the Trujillo district there was a 23.0% prevalence of feline immunodeficiency; and that positivity to Feline Viral Immunodeficiency (FIV) was associated with age and sex, and was not associated with access to the outside, coexistence with other felines, reproductive status and the origin of the domestic cats studied.
