Aflatoxins are among the most researched mycotoxins, and are responsible for the diseases known as aflatoxicosis. They are the result of the activity of certain fungi of the genus Aspergillus, mainly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxins can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, liver failure or kidney failure, but when there is chronic exposure it has been associated with the production of cancer cells. For this reason, the objective of this investigation is to determine the presence of aflatoxins in balanced food for dogs (Canis familiaris) sold in bulk in the markets of the Chimbote district. There were 12 samples of balanced food that were extracted from 10 markets located in Chimbote. 4 well- known brands of dog food were chosen, 100g of each brand purchased in the markets was collected, samples were taken from the bottom of the food bag to improve the detection of aflatoxins. For the determination of this compound, the Lateral Flow method was used. Of the 12 samples analyzed, the presence of aflatoxins was evident in a single sample with a value of 2.86 ppb, corresponding to a brand with 18% protein. The other samples present a negative value with respect to the presence of aflatoxins with values below 1.3 ppb.
