Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is one of the most common chronic noncommunicable diseases in the world. AF is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. Objective: To determine if DM2 is a risk factor for the development of de novo atrial fibrillation in patients of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital in 2019. Methods: Longitudinal analytical observational study of cases and controls. The data of all the patients treated in the internal medicine and endocrinology services of the Trujillo Regional Hospital in 2019 were analyzed. The Odds ratio was found between the variables of interest. Results: A total of 258,575 records of 68,822 different patients were reviewed. After using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a registry of 2064 patients remained, selection criteria were applied and all cases and 4 controls were selected for each case, leaving 260 participants. The mean age of the patients was 52.2 (SD: +13.42) and 69.23 % (180) were women. Patients with DM2 were found to have a much higher Odds of having de novo AF (8.36; 95% CI 4.19 - 16.65) compared to non-diabetics. Conclusions: DM2 is a risk factor for the development of de novo atrial fibrillation in patients of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital in 2019.
