To determine if COVID-19 is a risk factor with post-surgical mortality and morbidity in patients undergoing abdominal surgery by the General Surgery service of the Hospital Belén de Trujillo and Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo between March and December 2020. Material and methods: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was carried out, carried out in two of the main level III-1 hospitals in the region, which included 213 patients who underwent abdominal surgery between March and December 2020. According to the criteria Selection criteria were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of a positive test for COVID-19, where 69 were included in the exposed group and 144 in the unexposed group. The data from the clinical histories were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test and Chi Square, associations that presented p<0.05 were statistically significant. Results: No association of COVID-19 with 30-day mortality (p=0.750), readmission (p=0.868) or surgical reoperation (p=0.821) was found. Nor was it associated with pneumonia (4.3% vs 4.2%, p=0.951), acute respiratory failure (4.3% vs 8.3%, p=0.287) or need for mechanical ventilation (4.3% vs 3.5%, p=0.404). Regarding hemodynamic complications, the association with hypovolemic shock (0%; p=0.000), sepsis (0% vs 4.9%; p=0.063) or septic shock (0% vs 3.5; p=0.117) was not demonstrated. ). No cases of thrombotic complications were found in any of the cohorts. Conclusions: COVID-19 infection is not a risk factor for mortality or pulmonary, hemodynamic, or thrombotic complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
