This research was carried out with the purpose of establishing the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance in the subject of Language I, taught in the first cycle of university education. The method used corresponds to the quantitative approach, of the correlational type, of nonexperimental design. The population was made up of 123 students from the Medicine, Stomatology and Obstetrics 2019-2, from the Antenor Orrego University, to which the BarOn test was applied to measure their emotional intelligence. The results of the Spearman correlation test for scores of emotional intelligence and academic performance of medical students show positive and weak correlation (r = 0.038). In the case of Stomatology students, the value of the correlation coefficient r = 0.37 significant with a value of p = 0.04< 0.05, which shows that there is a positive, moderate and significant correlation between academic performance and emotional intelligence. In Obstetrics students, it is observed that the total emotional quotient (CE-T) has a moderate and direct or positive correlation (r = 0.251) with academic performance. In conclusion, since these correlations are positive or direct, the increase in emotional intelligence would improve academic performance.
