Objective: Determine if chronic constipation is a risk factor for inguinal hernia in patients treated at Hospital III-1 José Cayetano Heredia in Piura. Material and methods: Analytical, observational, case-control study; Consisting of patients treated for inguinal hernia in the General Surgery outpatient and emergency service of Hospital III-1 José Cayetano Heredia de Piura during 2021 to 2023. Bivariate hypothesis testing analysis was used to establish the differences between the cases and healthy controls, as well as the logistic regression analysis for the calculation of raw and adjusted Odds Ratio, with a 95% confidence interval and p value less than 0.05 to establish significance. Results: Significant differences were found in terms of age, sex, family history of constipation, presence of chronic constipation and fiber consumption between cases and controls. Statistically significant differences were found regarding the presence of comorbidities and hydration, adequate fiber consumption between cases and controls. Age over 47 years, male sex, family history of constipation, personal history of constipation, as well as chronic constipation increased the probability of being diagnosed with inguinal hernia between three and five times. Conclusions: The results of the study confirm the hypothesis that chronic constipation is a significant risk factor for inguinal hernia, increasing the probability of its diagnosis up to four times
